Duke Ernst the Pious of Saxe-Gotha is the great-grandfather of most of the crowned heads of Europe. But he was much more than that. Deeply shaped by the experience of the atrocities of the Thirty Years’ War, which brought death and destruction to Europe, the young duke wanted to do better. With fresh ideas and future-oriented innovations, he made the prototype of the German petty principality out of the small Saxe-Gotha. Central to this was his maxim: Education prevents wars.
