The Material You theme is an important part of Android 12. The whole interface and the colors in apps are determined by the wallpaper you choose. A list is now available of all brands that will support ‘Dynamic Colors’ and Samsung is missing there.
Material You and Android manufacturers
Google has unveiled the stable version of Android 12 in Europe that comes with the Material You theme. The intention is that the interface and the use of colors in apps and the menus on your phone form a better whole. Your smartphone picks the most important color tones from your wallpaper and then starts using them in a consistent way.
Smartphone brands are not obliged to adopt those so-called ‘Dynamic colours’ from Material You. XDA Developers has now in googles Material Componentslibrary found a list of smartphone brands that will use the software in their Android shell. In addition to Google itself, the following brands that are active in the Netherlands are part of that list:
- OPPO
- realme
- OnePlus
- Xiaomi
- Motorola
- Nokia
- Sony
- TCL
- Lenovo
What about Samsung?
As the attentive eye has already seen, Samsung is the big absentee here. We do know that Samsung will come up with a similar function in One UI 4.0, but the brand will use its own system for this. The downside is that your background colors are not expected to show up in third-party apps optimized for Material You.
Whether this will actually be the case in practice remains to be seen. What is certain is that Samsung can of course let the system work with its own apps. For the time being, it remains to wait for the stable release of Samsung’s Android 12 shell, which will be the first to be released for the Galaxy S21 series in November or December.
