These are useful family SUVs for €15,000

We don’t have to tell you that the most popular body style of the moment is the crossover/SUV. Reason for us to regularly pay attention to those sturdy high-chairs. From Dacia Duster to Porsche Cayenne; We have already had many used cars on this site, but the more bread and buttermodels for everyday family use have so far been somewhat conspicuous by their absence. We’ll make up for that this week.

With that position and 15 grand in our pocket, the progenitor of this segment should not be missing, so we kick off with a Nissan Qashqai. Who ‘bread and butter’ says, says ‘Volkswagen’, so we also pick up a Tiguan. Well, a German and a Japanese. Space left for a French representative in the form of the Peugeot 3008.

Nissan Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T Acenta – 2017 – 114,525 kilometers – €14,895

After the boring regulars Sunny and Almera, Nissan took a completely different tack in 2007 with the Qashqai. Actually little else than a lifted hatchback, but apparently everyone was waiting for that. The Qashqai turned out to be a cash cow, but suffered from the law of the inhibitory lead: the many competitors that followed were better and/or had (even) more success, making this (dairy) cow a bit lost in the large herd gone. But because of his pioneering role, the Japanese deserves a place in our spotlight. With 15 grand, one of the younger generations comes into the picture, such as this modest Nissan Qashqai: the basic engine (a blown 1.2, good for 115 hp) in combination with the second step on the luxury ladder: Acenta (Visia is the base). Color white, from the first owner, just completed the clock and it goes away with a one-year Bovag warranty. A little-used four-wheeler, it seems.

By the way, this white Qashqai is not that shabby at all: electrically folding exterior mirrors, a tow bar (1,200 kilos braked towing capacity), climate control and cruise control, parking sensors all around, electronic limited slip differential, LED daytime running lights, rain sensor and hill assist are available. The interior is – especially in the rear – more spacious than its predecessor, and the materials used as well as the layout are more attractive. On the road there are fewer differences compared to the original Qashqai. Above all, it is a relaxing driving car. Sports enthusiasts should shop elsewhere – the fairly simple torsion axle rear doesn’t allow much nonsense. Moreover, the controls are a bit dead. Suspension and damping are well balanced. In fast corners, the grip remains okay, despite the fact that the carriage wants to lean slightly. This emphasis on comfort continues under the hood. Renault’s four-cylinder engine is not a stripper, but simply smooth. The light and precise six-speed gearbox fits in well. In short: a neat, everyday means of transport for anyone who is averse to pretensions and pretensions.

Volkswagen Tiguan used car

Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4TSI Sport & Style – 2014 – 133,350 kilometers – €14,950

Well, the Qashqai is a real Volkswagen. The Tiguan is that too – even with a capital V! Volkswagen tends to follow trends rather than set trends, but when VW puts something into action, it does it well. In the sense that the large community will be able to agree with the new model. The Tiguan proved to be a great success from the start. So there’s plenty of choice on the used car market. Because the technology is sensitive to good and timely maintenance (which applies to more brands, see for example below), we err on the safe side.

Volkswagen Tiguan used car

What to think of this Volkswagen Tiguan: it is at the brand dealer, was sold new there at the time and has always been maintained and comes with a one-year Bovag warranty. However, the 6-TFG-09 (one ex-owner) is three years older than the Nissan (Volkswagens are a bit more expensive and this one is at the dealer) and has a bit more experience. Inside and outside look fine. The interior is well built, but the use of color is dominated by gloom. This has little to do with sport or style! The furniture is fine, there is plenty of space in the front and back. Exactly what you want, but it lacks a bit of flair.

The sliding rear seat is useful, which gives it MPV-like features. And the (folding) towbar can hold no less than 1,600 kilos of braking, so it can easily handle caravan holidays. You make this – just like in the Qashqai – in a relaxed way. The chassis feels solid, just like the steering: here it is a slightly heavier-turning hoop. Not sporty, but confidence-inspiring. With features such as navigation system, rear privacy glass, fatigue detector, folding tables on the back of the front seats and wide center armrest in the rear, this used car may look even more like the ideal family holiday trailer than the Qashqai. However, it is designed slightly more frivolously than the Tiguan that plays it safe. For some this is an advantage, for others it is a disadvantage.

Peugeot 3008 used car

Peugeot 3008 1.2 Puretech 130 Active – 2017 – 119,510 kilometers – €14,900

With the brand new e-3008 in prospect, it is nice to portray another older 3008. Not that of the first generation – a colleague compared that model to a newborn elephant, which is insulting to the poor animal – but that of the – much more expressive – type afterwards. Just like the TSI engines from rival Volkswagen, the French Puretech machines are of the sensitive type (good and timely maintenance is a must, with the oil change being recommended earlier than according to factory instructions), so we are also on the safe side here.

Peugeot 3008 used car

This Peugeot 3008 is located at Broekhuis Hyundai in Almere (the group also has Peugeot branches): quite modest in terms of motorization and equipment (the Access is the entry-level model), two owners drove less than 120,000 kilometers with it and it also goes away with Bovag- Guarantee. It is not only because of the bright blue paint that the appearance of the 3008 is more fashion-conscious or, if you like, less timeless/boring than the Tiguan. Inside, the differences are even greater because of the instruments located above the steering wheel. Extensive test sitting and driving, that is! This 3008 can be compared to the Tiguan in terms of equipment, but the safety systems present show that the concept is younger. There is enough space in the front and back, and the – removable – towbar can hold 1,300 kilos of braking. Under the hood is a three-cylinder that delivers the highest power with 130 hp. It makes little difference in terms of performance, but the Frenchman would be the most economical. The 3008 is the most comfortable of the three. The suspension is also adjusted quite smoothly, the firm damping ensures that it does not become soft. All this makes this used car a pleasant travel and holiday car, although it lacks that bit of variability that the Tiguan does have on board, but it does offer more. joie de vivre.

Which 15 grand family SUV appeals to you most?

After we have previously parked sportier crossovers (X1, Kuga, CX-5) and also CR-V and RAV-4 in these columns, it was now time for the more popular types. The Tiguan comes across as the most well-thought-out, but also the most stale between the Qashqai and the 3008. The latter is the most expressive on the outside and inside, but is therefore also taste-dependent – especially for the driver. Most down to earth seems like the Qashqai to us – also in terms of reliability. What would your choice be?
