BMW iX big winner
If you regularly have to tow a heavy trailer or caravan, it is better to walk around electric cars with a wide arc … Or not? The models on the list below prove that EVs can also function well as tow cars. These are the electric cars with the highest maximum towing weight.
When it comes to maximum towing weight in EVs, the BMW iX is the undisputed winner. The xDrive40, the xDrive50 and the M60 can tow up to 2,500 kilos. At some distance follows the Tesla Model X with a maximum towing weight of 2,268 kilos. This also applies to all variants of Tesla’s SUV. The third and last EV with a maximum towing weight of 2,000 kilos or more, again comes from Bavaria. The i7 xDrive60 can tow a maximum of 2,000 kilos.
Just imagine the tandem axle behind it.
Do you not necessarily have to tow 2,000 kilos or more, but are you regularly on the road with, for example, a fairly large caravan or boat? Then the choice is considerably wider. At Mercedes-Benz, the EQC, the EQA and the EQB can tow a maximum of 1,800 kilos. The latter two concern the four-wheel drive versions, the 300 and 350 4Matic. As a front-wheel drive 250, the EQA and EQB are also allowed to tow a maximum of only 750 kilos with brakes. A similar case occurs at Volvo. The four-wheel drive XC40 and C40 Recharge Twin are allowed to pull 1,800 kilos, the XC40 and C40 with front-wheel drive come out at a maximum of 1,500 kilos on the hook.
The last ones on this list are the electric cars that are allowed to tow a maximum of 1,600 kilos. Those are the BMW i4, Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5. If you can also manage with less towing weight, then the selection of EVs from which you can choose is considerably larger. Incidentally, in this list we have focused on electric passenger cars available in the Netherlands. For example, the American Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning can both tow between 4,500 and 5,000 kilos. Those are numbers…
For when you really want to pull a lot.
Incidentally, you should pay attention if you only have a B driving license. Then the combination of car and trailer may weigh a maximum of 3,500 kilos. If we take the iX with its curb weight of 2,365 kilograms and maximum permissible mass of 3,010 kilograms as an example, then suddenly there is little space left before you reach that limit. A BE driving license is therefore recommended if you travel with an EV and trailer.
