A well-known Android manufacturer has announced that it wants to make an improved version of the Mac keyboard (Magic Keyboard). Should Apple be concerned?
OnePlus introduces new keyboard
Android manufacturer OnePlus has announced that it is designing a new keyboard for the Mac. OnePlus is best known for smartphones such as the OnePlus 10 Probut has also made other products such as monitors.
The Android manufacturer is now working on its first keyboard, which should go into production early next year. A striking detail here: OnePlus has indicated that the keyboard will show similarities with the Magic Keyboard and will of course be compatible with macOS. Should Apple be concerned?
New Mac keyboard from OnePlus
Not much is known about the layout of the new keyboard, but it is clear that the keyboard will look a bit like a Mac keyboard. The keys should resemble those of a MacBook and the keyboard will not have a number pad on the right side.
The keyboard will be mainly made of aluminum, making it light and easy to carry. The keyboard is therefore compatible with macOS, but will also work under Linux and Windows. Whether the Android manufacturer also wants to offer interchangeable keys for this is not yet known.
OnePlus Keyboard: Quieter than a Mac keyboard
The production of the OnePlus keyboard mainly focuses on the loudness of the keyboard. The idea is that you make as little noise as possible when you are typing. Very nice if you’re in the office all day, but you don’t hear the ticking of yourself or colleagues all the time.
The silent keyboard is currently being improved based on general feedback on keyboards. The keyboard can be tested next month, the official announcement will follow in February. Mass production is scheduled for March or April, so OnePlus is speeding up production.
Should Apple be concerned about the OnePlus keyboard?
Now, of course, the question remains: will the OnePlus keyboard be a direct competitor to the Mac keyboard? It doesn’t seem like it for now, OnePlus is at least trying to differentiate itself by focusing on the loudness. Whether that will make a big difference remains to be seen, as the Mac keyboard has become much quieter in recent years.
For now, no cause for concern for Apple. The new OnePlus keyboard may become the cheaper entry-level model for Apple users who need a keyboard, but it won’t completely replace the well-known Magic Keyboard.
