According to the usually reliable Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have an adjustable aperture. The camera’s aperture determines how much light the lens lets through. This way you can choose how bright or dark your photos and videos will be. In addition, you can use the aperture to adjust which parts appear sharply in images and videos. With the iPhone 18 Pro (Max), this camera function becomes much better, because you can then mechanically adjust the aperture.
Adjustable aperture
Current iPhones have a standard aperture of ƒ/1.78. This has been the case since the iPhone 14 Pro, but that will change with the iPhone 18 Pro (Max). The 2026 Pro models have a new mechanical system that allows you to adjust the aperture yourself. This way you determine how much light enters the camera and on which object the camera focuses. So you get many more options when taking photos and videos.
The adjustable aperture is especially good news for users who use the iPhone’s camera for professional photos and recordings. While current lenses sometimes have difficulty focusing the image, you can adjust this yourself with the iPhone 18 Pro (Max). This is especially useful if images are overexposed or blurred in the Camera app; with an adjustable aperture you can solve this mechanically. This makes you less dependent on the software in the camera.

The adjustable aperture is added to the main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. It is still unclear whether the camera function will also come to the iPhone 18 Pro, according to Digital Chat Station that is indeed the case. This means that with both Pro models you determine the aperture of the camera yourself. This may make the wider camera island even larger, to add all the new technology to the housing.
