If you can’t find the videos you’re looking for on YouTube, you may be able to change the way you search. There are many different ways to find videos on YouTube. For example, you can search by title, but you can also filter your search results by the length of videos and the date they were uploaded. But did you know that you can also search using hashtags? In this article we explain how that works.
Although hashtags are not as prominent on YouTube as on platforms like Twitter and Instagram, you can use them to search more efficiently. With many videos you will see hashtags at the top of the title (or even in the video title or in the description), regardless of whether you visit the YouTube website or use the app.
That’s how you use them
There are several ways you can use hashtags to find videos. The most obvious option is to simply click on hashtags that you find above the title of videos. You then end up on a kind of ‘hashtag page’ with all videos that have been given the same tag, so in principle you will immediately find all videos about one particular topic (provided users have labeled their YouTube videos correctly).
You can find it with a video clip of the band Coldplay for example #Coldplay, then you will find 15,000 videos and 11,000 channels associated with this hashtag. This information is useful if you want to add hashtags to the videos you upload yourself: you can immediately see which tags are popular. According to YouTube, you can significantly improve the findability of your videos.
Incidentally, on the hastag pages you will not see the videos in the order in which they were uploaded. You see the most popular videos first.
Via search bar or URL
It is also possible to search directly for hashtags via the search bar in YouTube, but this works a little less well. You will see all the results related to your search, so you will not only see the videos that are actually linked to the hashtag.
If you are really looking for a specific tag, you can also add the URL www.youtube.com/hashtag/ followed by the topic you want to search for. This option only works if you visit YouTube via your browser and not if you use the mobile app for your smartphone or tablet.
