The Shanghai Motor Show is the stage where Volkswagen is expanding the ID family. Volkswagen shows the ID6 X and the ID 6 Crozz in China. The two electric SUVs are technically the same, but have different front and rear. Striking: Volkswagen has no plans to bring the ID6 to Europe for the time being.
Volkswagen’s electric ID family in Europe consists of the ID3 and ID4. There is a whole arsenal of new ID models in the pipeline, Volkswagen will be introducing the ID5 later this year and the ID Buzz will be on the roll for the coming years. In China, Volkswagen is now showing the ID6 X and ID6 Crozz. In fact, you should see both ID6s as the bigger, more spacious brother of the electric ID4 with room for seven passengers. The ID6 X and ID6 Buzz are technically similar, but are each produced by a different joint venture that Volkswagen has produced in China.
The fact that the electric ID6 is sold in two flavors in China is entirely in line with expectations. The FAW-Volkswagen partnership produces the ID4 as we know it in Europe in China as ID4 Crozz. The SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture sells in China a version of the electric SUV that differs from both the front and the rear, as the ID4 X. The ID6 X, the purple SUV in these photos, is being built by SAIC-Volkswagen according to that strategy. The ID6 Crozz comes from FAW-Volkswagen. Volkswagen tells Techzle that there are as yet no plans to bring the ID6 to Europe. Should Volkswagen change its mind at a later stage, it is likely that the FAW-Volkswagen ID6 Crozz corresponds to the version that will eventually have European soil under its wheels. Take that with a solid grain of salt, however, because the ID6 X seems to optically better match the European ID4. After all, few things are as inscrutable in the car world as Volkswagen’s Chinese model policy. In Europe, test specimens of the ID6 dressed up as Peugeot have surfaced several times.

It will come as no surprise that the electric ID6s, like the ID3 and ID4, are on the modular MEB platform intended for EVs. That brings well-known technology to the new Chinese pair. Just like the ID4, the Volkswagen ID6 will be available in China with a 58 kWh battery and a larger battery pack with a capacity of 77 kWh. Although Volkswagen is currently only reporting a four-wheel drive version thanks to two 306 hp electric motors, there is also expected to be a rear-wheel drive variant with 204 hp. The 306 hp top version is in any case able to reach 100 km / h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 160 km / h. Depending on the engine version and battery pack, the ID6 can travel 436 to 588 kilometers. Please note, these are figures according to the not exactly accurate NEDC measurement.

Volkswagen has big ID plans in Europe. By 2030, for example, around 70 percent of every Volkswagen sold in Europe must have an electric powertrain. In China too, the intentions in the field of ID are strong. Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstätter said during the unveiling of the ID6 that by 2030, half of all cars sold in China should be fully electric. That includes an arsenal of EVs, and that’s coming. In 2023, Volkswagen will have eight ID models on offer in China. Whether the two flavors that it delivers from both the ID4 and ID6 are seen as separate models is not entirely clear. The ID6 is 4.89 meters long, making the electric seven-seater 30 centimeters longer than the ID4. The wheelbase of the ID6 X and Crozz is 2.97 meters. The European Volkswagen ID4 has 20 centimeters less between its front and rear axles.
