New iPhones are usually more expensive than their predecessors, but the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are going to be a lot more expensive – here’s why.
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max will be much more expensive
The larger price increase of the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max is mainly caused by a part that has become considerably more expensive. And that part is working memory. The reason for this is the high demand from data centers. They are growing enormously and require more and more working memory for Artificial Intelligence. The demand there is so high that there are shortages in the production of smartphones.
Working memory is therefore increasing in price and in some cases this is possible three times as expensive become as before. This price increase is of course passed on in the price of new smartphones, including the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. It is not yet entirely clear how much more expensive these iPhones will become. The price of working memory is expected to drop again in a while, but it will take a few months before you as a consumer will notice anything.
This is what you can expect for that higher price
Even though the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max are becoming more expensive, they are lightning-fast smartphones that run on the new A20 Pro chip. The Dynamic Island will be smaller and for the first time the camera will have an aperture that you can set yourself. They also get an 18-MP front camera with Center Point, and the new C2 modem and the N2 chip. There may also be support for internet via satellite.
We expect the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max around the usual time in September. However, it looks like the regular iPhone 18 will not be presented yet. We don’t expect that until the spring of 2027.
