Group conversations have been expanded with a conversation history button in the new version of WhatsApp. The new feature in WhatsApp solves a major annoyance, because in new group conversations you often have no idea what the chat is about. Especially with an unclear group name, you may have to wonder why you have been added to a new group chat.

WhatsApp now offers the option to show between 25 and 100 messages to new group members. When you add a contact to a group conversation, you determine how many messages there are. Group Message History is WhatsApp’s latest feature, which gives new group members access to some or all of the conversation history from group chats. That doesn’t just happen, because you have to enable this button when you add a contact to a group conversation. Group administrators determine whether you can enable this option when adding a new contact. This is how activating the chat history works:
- Open WhatsApp;
- Go to a group conversation;
- Tap the name of the conversation;
- Choose ‘Add members’ and select a contact person;
- Turn on the switch behind ‘Send message history’;
- Choose the number of messages the new member sees;
You can choose from 100, 75, 50 or 25 messages.
- Finally, tap Done to add a new group member.
Have you activated the new feature in WhatsApp? Then pay close attention, because the new button in WhatsApp also has an important disadvantage. In some cases it is better if you do not provide access to recent messages because they discuss sensitive or secret information. So think carefully when adding a group member, it is not always wise to activate the conversation history. Only do this if the context of the conversation is really important to the new group member.
