Apple’s own news service has been given a new function, but in the Netherlands we still have to do without it. In fact, Apple News has not yet been released here at all.
No Apple News in the Netherlands
In 2019, Apple launched its own news service called Apple News. The articles in the News app are not written by Apple employees themselves, but are a collection of existing publications. Several major newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, Times and Forbes are affiliated with the news service. This mainly concerns American titles. That is not surprising, because unfortunately Apple has not yet released the function in the Netherlands.

The news service is currently only available in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the United States. It is not known if and when Apple News will come to Europe, probably the sales market in the Netherlands and Belgium is too small for Apple to introduce the service. In the Netherlands we now have to miss another new function, because Apple has expanded the news app with a fun game.
New game in the news app
In addition to the collection of magazines and newspapers, Apple News also has a puzzle page. This is not available to everyone, as this feature is part of Apple News Plus. In regions where the news service has been released, paying subscribers can use the puzzle page. That section has now been expanded with Quartilesa completely new game in Apple News Plus.
During the game you will see different groups of three letters each. It is up to the player to create as many words as possible. The longer the word, the more points you get. Each board has twenty letter groups, with which a maximum of five words can be made. A cool new feature in Apple News Plus, but Apple is not releasing the game in the Netherlands and Belgium.
This is how you use Apple News in the Netherlands
Quartiles serves as an addition to the puzzle page, where you could previously play crossword puzzles. It is also not available in the Netherlands and Belgium, but that does not mean that you cannot use Apple News here at all. The news widget is available, which you can add to the home screen of your iPhone. To do this, select ‘News’ in the list of widgets. You will then see an overview of the most important news.

Tapping the News widget will take you to the article’s website, not to the Apple News app itself. It is hoped that Apple will sooner or later bring the function to the Netherlands and Belgium. This way you can see all the news you are interested in in one overview. And that’s not all, because fun games are also added to the app. Unfortunately we cannot play them in Europe for the time being, but that may change in the future.
