Apple’s video player has become more user-friendly since the introduction of the Liquid Glass design. With the software update 26.4, you can now easily change the style of subtitles while watching a video, without having to dig deep into the settings.
This function is particularly useful for viewers who often watch series or films with foreign audio, for example on Apple TV+ or NLZiet. Previously the options were hidden under Accessibility, but now they can be accessed directly from the subtitle menu of the system video player. Unfortunately, this feature is not available in all apps.
Adjust subtitle style while watching
Available from iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4 and tvOS 26.4
When you watch a film, series or video with subtitles, it can sometimes be difficult to read the subtitles properly. Fortunately, you can easily change the style of the text display to make it easier to read the subtitles.
- Tap the screen or remote control to show the video player
- Optional: Tap the three dots (iPhone)
- Go to the subtitle symbol (speech bubble)
- Select ‘Style’ from the menu
- Choose a desired style

You have the option to choose your own style: Outline text, a transparent background, large text or classic. As you adjust the style, you’ll see a live preview of the layout’s appearance. Confirm your choice by selecting the desired style.
Unfortunately not in all apps
Unfortunately, this method of adjusting subtitles is not possible in all applications. You can only change the style of subtitles in apps that use the standard video player from Applesuch as the Apple TV app, videos in Safari, NLZiet, and so on. Applications that use their own video player, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+, do not offer this option unless they have added a variant to their media player themselves.

Create your perfect subtitle style
Anyone who has been using the Apple TV for some time knows that the default display for subtitles is not very clear, especially with Apple TV+ films and series. By default, the subtitles appear large and white at the bottom of the screen with a transparent gray background. Fortunately, you can easily create your own style so that the layout perfectly matches your wishes. How to read in the highlighted article below.
