Tip: a carefree night’s sleep thanks to Bedtime Mode in iOS 12

New in iOS 12 is the ability to mute all incoming messages and notifications while you sleep. For this you have to combine Do Not Disturb and Bedtime mode. We show you how to do this.

Bedtime mode: sleep without distraction

Many people find it difficult to put their iPhone away when they go to sleep. The WhatsApp messages, interesting articles and videos on YouTube just keep coming in. Very nice of course, but not when you have to go to bed. Fortunately, iOS 12 has a function that makes it a lot easier to ‘dim’ such notifications.

Do Not Disturb and Bedtime mode: that’s how it works

  1. In the settings menu, go to Do Not Disturb, slide the switch and do the same at ‘Scheduled’;
  2. Indicate what time you will go to sleep and when you usually wake up;
  3. Now slide the switch at the appeared option ‘Bedtime mode’.

Between the times you have communicated, in our example 22:00 and 6:50, you will not receive any notifications and notifications. Your home screen will only indicate that Bedtime mode is active. Of course you can still see what time it is, the date and the status bar.

It is important to note that Bedtime mode in combination with Do Not Disturb is not the same as airplane mode. This is because you disconnect your internet connection, so that no messages and calls can come in. In Bedtime mode, these messages are simply kept in the background so that you are not occupied while you want to go to sleep.

Apple and health

Do Not Disturb in combination with Bedtime Mode is one of the many innovations in iOS 12 aimed at improving digital health. Apple recognizes that smartphone addiction is an increasingly realistic problem and is trying to do something about it. Read more about this in the extensive iOS 12 review.
