Tip: Reset your HomePod in 4 steps

Are you going to sell your smart Apple speaker, or is it no longer responding as well as before? Then try resetting the HomePod. iPhone explains how.

Reset HomePod: this is how it works

You can reset your HomePod in two ways: via your iPad, iPhone or MacBook, or simply via the smart speaker itself. You reset the smart speaker to factory settings. This means that all your settings and preferences have been forgotten.

How to reset HomePod:

  1. Open the Home app on your iPad or iPhone;
  2. Long press the HomePod icon;
  3. Tap on ‘Settings’ and scroll down;
  4. Select ‘Remove accessory’ and choose ‘Done’.

You can also bring the HomePod to factory settings via your Mac. To do this, follow the steps above, but open the Home app in step 1 on your computer. You also have to tap the HomePod twice, instead of holding down the button for a long time.

Reset HomePod manually

Have you bought someone else’s HomePod and are you unable to reset the speaker via the app? Then it is best to perform a manual reset. The speaker is then set to the factory settings so that you can add it to your own smart home.

How to manually reset HomePod:

  1. Unplug the HomePod, wait five seconds, then plug it back in;
  2. Wait another five seconds and then press and hold the top of the speaker;
  3. Wait until the white light turns red after which Siri tells you that you are about to reset the speaker;
  4. Keep holding the top until you hear three beeps: the HomePod will now reset.

Why reset HomePod?

The HomePod is a smart piece of technology, but sometimes things go wrong. This makes it convenient to start with a fresh installation. Even if your HomePod reacts strangely, it is worth doing a factory reset. And are you going to return the smart speaker to Apple for repair? Then also set it to factory settings in advance; then the repairers can get started quickly.
