Turn off Touch ID and Face ID

Tip: this is how you quickly turn off Touch ID and Face ID on your iPhone

Every iPhone owner will undoubtedly use Touch ID or Face ID, as they are fast and secure ways to unlock the device. Still, it can be useful in some situations to disable Touch ID or Face ID, such as when you feel threatened and you may be forced to scan your fingerprint or face to access your iPhone.

You may also not completely trust your roommates, for example, because they can easily put your finger on the Touch ID scanner to see all the information on your iPhone, when you are sleeping for example. If that is the case, you can follow the steps below to turn off the fingerprint or face scanner. When you do this, your iPhone passcode is also required to unlock the phone. That information is not on the device itself, but you have often remembered it.

  1. First of all, make sure that the emergency SOS notification is enabled on your iPhone;
  2. When you then lock your iPhone, you have to press the power button five times in a row. If you have an iPhone 8 or X, press the button on the side and one of the volume buttons at the same time and hold;
  3. After this, the screen with the SOS emergency message appears. Finally, tap ‘Cancel’ or press the power button again to turn the screen off.

Once you have completed the steps above, you will find that you will need to enter your passcode to unlock your iPhone again. You must also use the numeric code when scanning your fingerprint or face.
