Spotify is rolling out a major update to its Apple Watch app. The update makes it possible to stream music from your Watch without your iPhone being nearby. That is how it works.
Tip: Stream Spotify from your Apple Watch without an iPhone
The Apple Watch Spotify app has been available for a few years now, but now comes with a new feature. It is possible to stream Spotify directly to your Bluetooth headphones. This is especially useful if you are going to exercise, for example, and prefer not to take your iPhone with you.
First of all, make sure your Apple Watch is connected to the internet and you have installed the Spotify app on your Apple Watch. That is how it works.
- Open the Spotify app on your Apple Watch;
- Choose the song or playlist you want to stream;
Use the Digital Crown to scroll through the lists.
- Then tap the stream icon at the bottom right of the screen;
- You will now see a list of all the devices you can stream Spotify to. Tap on Apple Watch;
- Tap pair device;
- Select the desired device from the list to play music
For example your bluetooth headphones.
Previously, streaming from your Watch was only possible if your paired iPhone was nearby, regardless of whether you have an Apple Watch with mobile internet. That is about to change. After several months of testing beta versions, Spotify has confirmed that the feature is now officially rolling out to Watch users. For the time being, the feature will remain available in the beta version and is not yet available to all users. So you may have to be patient until you can use the feature yourself.
