Too bad: iPhone 15 camera won’t get a cool upgrade

It almost goes without saying that the camera of the next iPhone will be considerably better. Still, the iPhone 15 camera doesn’t get a certain upgrade.

iPhone 15 main camera will not get this upgrade

You may immediately think that the iPhone 15 will not get a periscope camera, but the rumors follow that this special camera will come. But reliable Apple expert Ming-Chi Kuo said on Twitter that another expected camera feature is unlikely to come.

This upgrade for the rear camera of the iPhone 15 has to do with the number of internal lenses. According to a previous rumor, the camera of the iPhone 15 would have up to 8 internal lenses (8P). This is one extra internal lens more than in the iPhone 14 Pro. Usually, manufacturers add these types of internal lenses to counteract distortion. And that’s especially important with wide-angle lenses, such as those on the iPhone.

It’s not nice that the iPhone 15 doesn’t get this specific lens upgrade, but luckily it seems that the big update, the periscope camera, is coming. In this special camera, a mirror reflects the incoming light at an angle of 90 degrees. Then the light reaches the camera sensor and the picture is taken.

The advantage of mirroring the light is that the camera lenses can now be placed next to each other. Normally the lenses are on top of each other and because the iPhone is quite thin, Apple naturally only has a limited amount of space for it.

The advantage of such a periscope camera is that you can get a much better optical zoom. The Galaxy S22 Ultra already has a periscope lens. This gives you a 10x optical zoom (and a 100x digital zoom). In comparison: the iPhone 14 Pro (€ 1,289) without periscope camera has 6x optical zoom (3x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out) and 15x digital zoom.
