A popular Spotify feature that has always been available in the free version now seems to be reserved only for paying users. This is what’s going on.

It seems like Spotify is looking for ways to get users to sign up for a Premium subscription. A popular Spotify feature, which was always available in the free version, now suddenly seems exclusive to paying users.
This concerns the song lyrics that always automatically appeared at the bottom of the screen when you play a track. In the free version, only the text ‘Enjoy song lyrics on Spotify Premium’ and a link to register will suddenly appear in that spot.
Lyrics not gone yet
You may currently still see lyrics if you use the free version of Spotify. It turns out to be part of a test by Spotify and not yet a measure that has already been implemented everywhere. The feature is therefore currently available to everyone on Spotify.
CJ Stanley, Spotify’s co-head of global communications, says: “At Spotify we routinely run a number of tests, some of which ultimately improve the user experience and others that serve only as an important learning experience. We have no further news to report at this time.” He added that the test is currently being conducted with a limited number of users in a few markets, without specifying further.
More Premium users
It’s still possible that Spotify will make the lyrics feature exclusive to Premium users. The company has poured billions into podcasts and audiobooks, but it hasn’t yielded much. Spotify seems to have given up on the idea of exclusive content as a revenue model. Instead, it looks for other features that users can pay for.
Spotify’s most successful Premium-only feature so far is probably DJ, which is not yet available in the Netherlands. It is an AI tool that puts together a personalized radio station for you and does a surprisingly good job. Another reason for a Premium subscription may be HiFi. That is a lossless streaming option that we are still waiting for and which will probably be called Supremium.
