Different approach A-segment works out well
Because Toyota does many things differently with the Aygo X than other manufacturers in the smallest segment, we were very curious how that method would work out. In the six-month endurance test, we got to know the tough little one well. When recording the video in which we look back at the endurance test, the Toyota Aygo X still had to tolerate the Kia Picanto, but the smallest Toyota can now call itself the best-selling car in the Netherlands. It doesn’t seem to bother him that he’s cramped in the back. What else lingers after six months of Aygo X?
The Toyota Aygo X became available in the course of 2022 and finished sixth overall in the sales list. In the A segment, he only had to tolerate the Kia Picanto. In January 2023, the Toyota already sold better than the Korean whopper in this class. The competition is getting old – think of the otherwise still strong Hyundai i10 – or is dropping out: VW has pulled the plug on the more than eleven-year-old Up.
Toyota Aygo still, no more 108 and C1
Toyota only continued with the new Aygo, which got adventurous traits with the X of cross, while Peugeot and Citroën dropped out and did not bring a new 108 and C1. Still, the rapid advance of the Aygo X is quite surprising. Cars are becoming more and more expensive and we are also seeing this development at the lower end of the market. It shows that for a more nicely dressed Aygo X you will also soon have an amount of €21,000. Is dressing necessary? Because the model already looks very good as standard. With its wheels placed on the extreme corners and pronounced interplay of lines, the model even received a favorable review from car designer Niels van Roij.
Aygo X is better in the city than out of it
The space in the back seat is limited, the same applies to the power of the 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, with which the car certainly does not live up to its tough appearance. Cool yes, our endurance tester has 18-inch wheels. Strong points are the very mature driving characteristics, where the car feels like a Yaris, the slightly larger model with which it shares its base. This choice of Toyota worked out well. In a comparison test, in which the endurance test Aygo X was allowed to prove itself against a fairly modest Yaris with the same engine, the difference in comfort was still palpable. The Yaris is not only bigger, but actually ‘more car’. It didn’t stop us from using the Aygo X for a trip to the historic edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. We also visited Paris to let it shine there; that’s exactly where his crawl-by-sneak-through character fits well. Then you also have enough with its 72 hp. It is precisely when the speed exceeds 100 km / h that you lack power and also that the noise from outside swells.
Aygo X has a high level multimedia system and assistance systems
Two more factors determine the maturity of the Aygo X. The multimedia system and the package of assistance systems are not inferior to those of cars that belong in the segment above. With its predecessor in the endurance test garage, the Yaris Cross, we still encountered a hypersensitive tire pressure monitoring system, but it already worked a lot better in the Aygo X.
In summer and autumn almost 1 in 19
Consumption was in the first three months 1 to 18.7. In the last weeks of 2022 and the first week of January it became chilly and there was often strong wind. It ensured that the average consumption rose to 1 in 17.8. Despite its larger wheels, the Aygo X did quite well compared to the endurance test Hyundai i10 that we drove two years earlier: 1 in 16.7 we then achieved, and before the real winter cold set in, the compact A segment endurance tester is already warming up on the importer’s site.
