The Windows Photos program lets you bring photos to life by turning them into moving pictures. These five-second animation images are also known as gifs. They can be used in, for example, emails or on Facebook. So go ahead and add a festive 3D effect, moving texts or a jumping cow to that fun photo.

Creating an animation from a photo is easy with the Photos program. Open the app like this:

  • In the Taskbar, click the search box and type ‘Photos’.
  • Click on the app photos.

Turn a photo into a 5 second gif with fun animation effects. For example, add a confetti cannon, balloons or a news logo.

  • Click on a photo.
  • Click on the top right Edit and create > Add 3D Effects.
  • click on Effects.
  • Use the slider below the video to indicate where the effect should start.
  • Click on an effect. For example confetti cannon.
  • Drag the effect to the correct place on the image.
  • Drag the corners of the effect outward or inward to make the effect larger or smaller.
  • Rotate the image horizontally or vertically by dragging the round arrows.
  • Press the play button (triangle below the photo) to see the effect.
  • click on Save a copy > Export.
  • Browse to the folder where the video should be.
  • click on Export.

Add a 3D animation to a photo. How about a jumping cow, a spinning dinosaur or a rocking lighthouse.

• Click on the picture.
• Click at the top right on Edit and create > Add 3D Effects.
• Click on 3D library.
• Use the slider below the video to indicate where the effect should start.
• Choose a category.
• Choose an effect.
• Drag the effect to the correct place on the image.
• Drag the corners of the effect outward or inward to make the effect larger or smaller.
• Rotate the effect horizontally or vertically by dragging the circular arrows.
• Choose an animation at ‘Quick animations’. For example: Looking around or To swing.
• Press the play button to see the effect.
• Click on Save a copy > Export.
• Browse to the folder where the video should be and click Export.

Add animated text to a photo. Nice to send as a congratulation.

  • Click on the picture.
  • Click on the top right Edit and create > Add animated text.
  • Use the slider below the video to indicate where the effect should start.
  • Type some text in the top right of the box.
  • Under ‘Animated text style’, click the animation style, for example Joy.
  • Under ‘Layout’, select the location of the text, such as below.
  • Press the play button to see the effect.
  • click on Save a copy > Export.
  • Browse to the folder where the video should be.
  • click on Export.

Bring the background to life by zooming in or tilting the image.

  • Click on the picture.
  • Click on the top right Edit and create > Add animated text.
  • Click on the menu above the photo Movement.
  • Choose how the photo should move by choosing an option on the right, such as Tilt up or Zoom in on the right.
  • Press the play button to see the effect.
  • click on Save a copy > Export.
  • Browse to the folder where the video should be.
  • click on Export.

Give the animation a nice effect with a filter.

  • Click on the picture.
  • Click on the top right Edit and create > Add animated text.
  • Click on the menu above the photo Filters.
  • Choose a filter on the right.
  • Press the play button to see the effect.
  • click on Save a copy > Export.
  • Browse to the folder where the video should be.
  • click on Export.
