Use satellite roadside assistance on your iPhone

Apple has expanded the SOS emergency notification via Satellite with a new function in the United States. For example, with an iPhone 14 (Plus), iPhone 14 Pro (Max) or newer, you can text for roadside assistance when you are without a network and have no mobile or WiFi coverage.

If your car, motorcycle or camper is not working and you are without coverage, you can seek help via satellite. Apple has set up a collaboration here with the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Availability of roadside assistance via satellite

Satellite roadside assistance is only available in the US for residents, visitors and tourists. This feature is free for two years after activation of an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro and requires iOS 17 or later.

AAA provides roadside assistance for four-wheel, engine-driven cars, RVs and trucks. Roadside assistance is covered under AAA membership and is also available separately to non-members. Pricing information will be provided before assistance is sent.

How satellite connection works

If you need help with car problems, such as because the car has a flat tire, is out of gas or electricity, or you have locked yourself out, and you have no network connection, you can contact the American Automobile Association (AAA) via satellite for roadside assistance to request.

Satellites move fast, have low bandwidth and are located hundreds of kilometers away from Earth. Sending or receiving a message via a satellite connection is therefore slightly different than via a mobile network:

  • In ideal conditions with a direct view of the sky and horizon, it can take up to 15 seconds for a message to be sent. Under trees with sparse or medium foliage, this may take longer than a minute.
  • If you are under dense foliage or surrounded by other obstacles, you may not be able to connect to a satellite.
  • Connection time may also be affected by your environment, message length, and satellite network status and availability.

To connect to a satellite, your iPhone must have compatible software. Before you go somewhere where you don’t have cell service or Wi-Fi, be sure to update to the latest version of iOS.
