It is often very practical if someone who sends you a message automatically receives a response back. Such an autoreply is not possible by default in WhatsApp, but with this trick you can make it happen!
Auto reply in WhatsApp
Sometimes you just don’t want to be disturbed. Or maybe you don’t want to do that after a certain time every night. Then it is very useful if you can compose a message that will be sent automatically when someone sends you a message after that time. This option is not included by default in WhatsApp, but there is a way to make it happen!
This method is called WhatsApp Business. This version of WhatsApp is free for everyone to use. The app doesn’t replace the ‘normal’ version you already use on your iPhone, but you also can’t use them side by side at the same time. That’s no problem because WhatsApp Business is everything you’re used to, but with a number of extra features.
This is how you set up an auto-reply or out-of-office message
Installing WhatsApp Business is no different from installing the ‘normal’ version. However, you cannot use them side by side if you use the same telephone number for both apps. To switch could be. To set up an autoreply in WhatsApp Business, follow these steps:
- Open ‘WhatsApp Business’;
- Go to ‘Tools’;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Out of Office Message’;
- Turn on ‘Send away message’.
You then indicate the time frame in which the autoreply in WhatsApp should be active and for which recipients. At the bottom you will see the standard message that will be sent automatically. Of course you are free to make this a more personal message.
Autoreply WhatsApp at fixed times
It is also possible to set the autoreply in WhatsApp for the entire week. For example, every evening after a certain time until sometime in the morning. You must enter these times elsewhere. WhatsApp Business is specifically intended for companies. And companies in principle do not want to be disturbed outside opening hours. That is why you must first add ‘opening hours’.
To set the opening hours, tap ‘Tools’ again and then tap ‘Profile’. Now tap ‘Add opening hours’ and then ‘Specific opening hours’. Then enter the times per day during which you want to be reachable.
When you’re done with that, go back to the Out of Office message. Tap on ‘Times’ and choose the option ‘Outside opening hours’.
It would be useful if WhatsApp added this feature to the regular version. But as long as that is not the case, you can use WhatsApp Business to arrange an autoreply.

In addition to setting up an autoreply, WhatsApp Business offers even more extra functions. Of course, they are all intended for business users, so they are not necessarily useful for private users. For example, you can set shortcuts for standard messages that you often send (Quick Replies) and send a short link that invites someone to chat with you in WhatsApp.
