Using Facebook Messenger app

Messenger is an app of the social network Facebook. Facebook users can contact each other through the app. Use Messenger to send messages and photos, but also to make (video) calls with Facebook friends.

To use the messaging service on a smartphone or tablet, the free Messenger app is required. Download it to an iPhone or iPad via the App Store. For Android devices, Messenger is in the Play Store. Messenger can only be used by people with a Facebook account. Read about this in the article ‘Create Facebook and find friends’.

When using Messenger for the first time, log in with your Facebook account. This is how it works on an Android device:

• Tap on Phone number or email address and enter the number or address.
• Tap on password and enter the password.
• Tap on To register.
• Tap on Not now not to save the information.
• Tap on Not now or Switch not to search for contacts or to search for contacts by telephone. At ‘Not now’, tap OK.

At the bottom of the app window are two tabs; chat and people. At ‘Chats’ you will find an overview of all conversations. This is also the place to start a new conversation. On the “People” tab, “Active” shows a list of friends who are currently active on Messenger. Under ‘Stories’ you will find stories (photos and videos) from friends. These stories can be seen for 24 hours.

Follow the steps below to send a text message:

• Tap at the bottom of the screen chats.
• Tap the pencil square icon (iOS) or pencil icon (Android) at the top right.
• Type the name of the person you want and tap it. Or tap a name directly in the suggestions.
• Tap at the bottom of the screen ah.
• Type the message.
• Tap the blue arrow .

The conversation will now appear in the overview on the Chats tab. To continue chatting with the same person, tap their name in the overview.

It is also possible to send a photo to a contact via Messenger.

• Start a new conversation as explained in the section above or open an existing conversation.
• Tap the landscape square at the bottom of the screen.
• The first time, you need to give Messenger access to your photos and videos. On an Android device, tap To allow. On an iPhone or iPad, tap Allow access and then on Give access to all photos.
• Tap the desired image.
• Tap on Send.

Try (video) calling via Messenger:

• Tap at the bottom of the screen chats.
• Tap the pencil square icon (iOS) or pencil icon (Android) at the top right.
• Type the name of the person you want and tap it. Or tap a name directly in the suggestions.
• Tap a phone icon in the top right to call. Do you want to call with image? Then tap the icon of a camera to start a video call.
• The first time, Messenger asks for access to the microphone (and possibly camera). Tap on OK (iOS) or To allow (Android) to grant access.
