View a workout route in the Fitness app for iPhone

When you use the Workout app on your Apple Watch or the fitness app on your iPhone, various data related to your training is collected. This includes not only health information, but also aspects such as weather, elevation changes, pace and the route traveled.

For most activities, the GPS information comes from the iPhone or Apple Watch itself, as the Series 2 and later models are equipped with a GPS chip. Do you have an older Apple Watch? In that case, the location data of the paired iPhone is used. You can view the route of your training in detail via the fitness app.

View route of a workout

  • Open the fitness application on your iPhone
  • Navigate to the ‘Overview’ tab
  • Tap ‘>’ under ‘Sessions’
  • Open a desired workout
  • Tap at the bottom of the map at ‘Route’ or ‘Map’

Don’t see the sessions widget in the overview? Then scroll all the way down to the ‘Overview’ tab and tap ‘Change overview’. Then tap the plus button and add the ‘Sessions’ widget. Are you still using the Activity application? Then open it, navigate to the ‘Workouts’ tab and open a desired workout.

A map with the route walked or driven is then shown. You can see that in most cases the line has different colors. Red represents stops and breaks, orange means that the speed was lower than average, green is fine compared to your average speed.

Not for all Workouts

Unfortunately, the GPS function is not always available. For example, the route is only shown when the workout uses the GPS data. This is the case when walking, running, cycling, hiking, etc. outdoors. Unfortunately, workouts monitored by ‘Other Workout’ cannot display GPS data.
