Working on the shop, or stretched out in the back?
With their relatively round and somewhat convex shape, the Volkswagen ID4 and ID5 differ in design from the rest of the Volkswagen family. With this Gen.Travel Concept, Volkswagen breaks completely with the well-known design, but that is not the only striking thing about the study model. It is a fully electrically powered autonomous car with gullwing doors.
Not charmed by the appearance of this Gen.Travel? Fear not: it probably won’t go into production. The Gen.Travel is in fact a design study, a finger exercise by Volkswagen. With the Gen.Travel, Volkswagen envisions an electric car that can go through the automotive life completely independently – level 5 -. According to its creators, the Gen.Travel is especially suitable for covering large distances, so extra attention has been paid to the interior. With the Gen.Travel – of which there is at least one driving prototype – Volkswagen wants to test the reactions of the public during Chantilly Arts & France, which takes place this week near Paris.
Volkswagen describes the Gen.Travel as a car that is somewhere between a sedan and an MPV. The interior of the design study is multifunctional. You can stretch out in it, have a meeting or simply just sit in it. Volkswagen speaks of a smart system with belts to also protect lying passengers. Smart use of interior lighting should reduce the risk of motion sickness. No concept car anymore without a passage about naturally-friendly materials, so the Gen.Travel is, according to Volkswagen, filled with recycled and natural items. The Gen.Travel has Electric Active Body Control (eABC), which with its springs and dampers takes into account upcoming braking or steering actions in advance.
Is the Gen.Travel pure future music? For the time being, yes, although it is of course not excluded that certain properties or ideas applied in the model will eventually return in a production model.
