Apple is preparing another update for the iPhone! The most recent software version is iOS 18.4, with which Apple brought a series of new functions to the smartphone. With the update you got new emoji, Apple Intelligence became available in Europe and Apple introduced more regulators for the control panel. Apple released iOS 18.4 at the end of March, so the release of iOS 18.5 is slowly coming.
The first test versions of iOS 18.5 are already available, so that developers can get started with the latest software version. It seems that Apple brings few new functions to the iPhone with iOS 18.5. In the first test versions, the company only makes small improvements, for example, AppleCare is explained more clearly in a frame and you can adjust the layout of the mail app more easily. The final version of the update will probably appear next month. In 2024, iOS 17.5 was released on Monday 13 May, one year earlier, iOS 16.5 was released on Thursday 18 May and in 2022 iOS 15.5 was released on Monday 16 May. Apple usually maintains the same timeline when releasing new software versions. It is therefore expected that the final update will be released in the second week of May.
Apple often releases updates on a Monday or Tuesday, so the release of iOS 18.5 may stand out Monday May 12 or Tuesday May 13, 2025. New software versions are almost always released in the evening, around 7 p.m. Dutch time. Therefore, secure those days in your agenda, because there is a good chance that iOS 18.5 can be installed on your iPhone on one of those evenings.
Few new functions
It seems that iOS 18.5 brings few new functions to your iPhone, but of course we only know that after the final release of the update. That is not very strange, because Apple has already rolled out the majority of all innovations of iOS 18 in previous updates. Apple Intelligence is a big exception, it is unknown when those features are available in Dutch.
For major changes we have to wait for iOS 19, that software version already presents Apple in June. It is expected that Apple will only bring large new functions to the iPhone with iOS 19. Nevertheless, it is advisable to update your iPhone as soon as possible after the release of iOS 18.5, so that the software and security are completely in order again. Therefore, turn on ‘automatic updates’ under ‘Settings> General> Software update’, so that your iPhone iOS 18.5 will soon install!
