Even the most basic versions of models that once stood on every street corner can increase in value over time. If they are rare enough, there is undoubtedly an enthusiast who is willing to pay a lot of money for them. What about this wonderfully ‘bare’ Volkswagen Golf II, for example?

The once huge amount of Volkswagen Golf II has now been thinned out considerably. If you see another one, chances are it’s not quite original anymore. This red is clearly an exception and is a delightful relic of simpler times. Where the Golf sometimes wanted to fall prey to creatives who wanted to make it look as aggressive as possible, this Golf has kept it wonderfully authentic for 35 years. It is nice and ‘cheap’ red, has steel wheels underneath and window cranks. Beautiful right?

The simplicity lies in more things, because we are dealing here with a Golf 1.3, the absolute entry-level version. At the time, it cost just over €10,000. Speaking of other times. A number of empty ‘buttons’ on the dashboard constantly remind you that in 1987 someone has been shopping at Volkswagen by hand, otherwise the only 54 hp four-cylinder engine will take care of that. Patience is a virtue here. From standstill you are on the road for 16.7 seconds before the speedometer reaches 100 km/h. After all these years, it may even take a little longer. Also (unless you have the wind at your back or drive downhill) you will not drive faster than 151 km/h.

So you have a fairly Spartan means of transport, but a moving time capsule. Because judging by the photos, we are dealing with a Golf that has been treated with love. It has had only two owners since 1996 (it is unknown before) and the odometer is just over 161,000 km. It will not be a competition state Golf, but it will be a neat and rare pure example. But is anyone willing to tap off the asking price of €4,250? Because that is quite a lot of money for a small car, so the overall picture must be convincing.
