Damn, a Steilheck!
You usually don’t attract much attention with a Volkswagen Polo, but it used to be really down-to-earth. Especially if you opted for a so-called ‘Steilheck’ like this.
Just a month ago we took a look at a particularly unpretentious Volkswagen from the 1980s. A white three-door Golf 1.6 C, to be precise. Now colleague Joost Boers has spotted a Volkswagen that resembles it in several respects. A real Polo hatchback from 1988, also painted in the once very fresh white.
The freshness has worn off a bit after 35 years and yet the owner of this Polo cannot complain about how the paint still looks. Even the Fox striping along the flanks is still neat. However, there appears to have been some re-spray between the rear right wheel arch and the fuel filler flap. Presumably that’s where the rust specter has reared its head. The rest of the car seems to have been spared such an extensive visit. The bumpers are a bit faded, but that’s part of it after all these years. Nice to see that at least the original wheels are still present.
Such a simple Polo could only have lived this long if someone had been very attached to it. That appears to be the case, because it remained with one owner from 1994 to 2016. In 2016, even such a once completely inconspicuous Polo was fun enough for a possible enthusiast and that is why we dare to say that the Steilheck has now ended up in the enthusiast circuit. In any case, the current owner has been on the road with it for almost seven years. Good luck!
