Volkswagen: ‘Production of 100,000 cars at stake’

The Volkswagen Group is anticipating a significant production delay this year. Due to the corona crisis, there is a hitch at suppliers.

Due to the corona crisis, all car production was halted for a while last spring, but after that a considerable catch-up was made. However, the consequences of the halted production may only become really problematic this year. The Volkswagen Group expects that. Not so much because of its own production capacity, but because of the supply of electronic components. According to the group, a supplier of these has put production for the car industry on the back burner when scaling down activities. Therefore, it is now falling short in deliveries.

Klaus Zellmer, member of the Volkswagen Board of Directors, is very concerned. According to him, production of many models is already slowing down. “We have to fight for every car this year,” he said. Handelsblatt. “Nobody knows for sure when the supply will be up to standard again.” Zellmer warns that possibly more than 100,000 cars that the Volkswagen Group wanted to build this year cannot be manufactured. It is said to be mainly models on the MQB platform, including the Golf, Octavia and Leon.
