Previous rumors that the American branch of Volkswagen is changing its name to Voltswagen due to its full focus on electric mobility seem to be correct. Volkswagen USA has now officially changed the name, but it remains confusing whether it is a joke or not.
Perhaps the American branch of Volkswagen does not fully understand that April 1 jokes have to be made on April 1, but for the time being we assume that it is really true: Volkswagen becomes Voltswagen in the US. The brand has since changed the name on its American social media channels, accompanied by a short animation in which the name changes. “We know that 66 is a somewhat strange age to change names, but we have always remained young at heart. We are introducing Voltswagen. Similar to Volkswagen, but with a renewed focus on electric driving,” said ‘Voltswagen’.
The name change is immediately used to announce that US customers can order the ID4 from today. So there are concrete product news, which is either very clever marketing wrapped in a joke, or just really belongs to a new chapter for the brand in the US. What all this means for the existing models with fuel engines is not yet known. After all, there is no extensive press release at the time of writing and the American media site is down. Volkswagen Group has also not yet issued an official statement about it. Again, it’s March 30th and not April 1st, so you can bet that this will raise eyebrows if it turns out to be one big joke.
