Watch YouTube ad-free on your iPhone (all for free!)

Are you also done with the annoying advertisements on the internet and YouTube? This way you can watch YouTube completely without advertising on your iPhone, and that for free!

More and more advertisements on YouTube

You may have noticed: since the launch of YouTube Premium, you have been seeing more and more and longer advertisements with the video service. YouTube Premium was launched in the Netherlands in 2018 and has gained a number of new features over the past few years. For example, you can now continue to watch a YouTube video while opening another app and you will not see any advertisements.

With a paid YouTube Premium account, the ads disappear (and you get the new features), but you pay 6.99 per month for the subscription. In addition to this subscription, you have a version with YouTube Music for EUR 11.99 per month and a family subscription for EUR 17.99. You and five family members can then watch YouTube without advertising.

Don’t feel like paying for the (originally free) video service? Then there are some easy ways to avoid the commercials on YouTube for free. We explain how to do that.

1. Watch YouTube without ads: install AdGuard

A quick way to watch YouTube (or other websites) without ads is to install an ad blocker on your iPhone. These are often free to install via the App Store. One of these ad blockers is AdGuard, through this app you can decide where you want to turn off the ads. The free version of AdGuard at least blocks the ads in Safari. You do this as follows:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;

  2. Tap on ‘Safari’ and go to ‘Extensions’;

  3. Enable ‘AdGuard’ under ‘Content Blocks’.

It is important that you have also enabled in the AdGuard app itself that the ad blocker has access to Safari. You do this by turning on ‘Safari protection’ in the app. If you then watch YouTube via Safari (so not via the app), advertisements in the video are in most cases stopped by the ad blocker.

The free version of AdGuard works very well, but of course it is not foolproof. You can take out a subscription to always block more advanced advertisements. You then pay 0.99 euros monthly, 5.49 euros annually or you pay 15.99 euros once to use the subscription forever. In any case, the app can be downloaded for free in the App Store:

2. Download Vinegar to avoid ads on YouTube

Do you want to be sure of watching YouTube without advertising, but do you think YouTube Premium and AdGuard are too expensive? Then downloading Vinegar is a good option. For the app you pay a one-time fee of 2.49 euros in the App Store and the ad blocker then ensures that you always see YouTube without advertising. Here too you have to watch YouTube in Safari and not in the app of the video service itself.

The big plus of Vinegar is that other benefits of, for example, YouTube Premium are also included in the subscription. For example, you can place a reduced YouTube video in the corner of your screen (picture-in-picture) and the video will continue to play in the meantime. In this way it is possible to watch a YouTube video while you are in WhatsApp, for example. That’s because the Vinegar replaces the entire YouTube player with Apple’s built-in media player. Another good reason to use this app.
