What does water look like at the triple point?

In the chapter ‘condensed phases’ of my chemistry course, the concept of ‘triple point’ is discussed. Now my question is what matter (e.g. water) looks like at this point where the three phase transitions are in equilibrium?

We are used to seeing water in its different states of matter every day: ice, liquid water and water vapour. What can I imagine at this triple point? Thanks in advance.

Answer

Hi Freke,

At the triple point of water (0.01 °C and 0.006 atm), the three phases of water are in equilibrium: solid ice, liquid water and water vapor. You obviously can’t see the water vapor, but the liquid and solid phases look perfectly normal.
