WhatsApp has added a new feature that reveals when you are online. Curious how that works? You need to know this.
WhatsApp adds function
Do you ever read unseen with group discussions? Then we have bad news, because WhatsApp has added a new feature. With the new feature you can see how many users are online in a group discussion. This information is shown under the title of the group chat. You saw the names of all group members there earlier, but that will change in the latest version of WhatsApp.
The renewed version of WhatsApp shows how many users have opened a group conversation at a certain moment. Under the group title appears how many members are online in total, for example, you see ‘2 online’. In that case you know that at that time two users are active in the group conversation, those are you and another contact person. Would you rather not do that? This way you switch off the function.
Hide online on WhatsApp
In the latest version of WhatsApp, the chat service shows how many users are in a group discussion at the same time. This information appears in the subtitle of the group. The result is that you no longer see who the participants of the group are at a glance or who is typing. Does that prefer you? Then you can hide that you are online. You do that as follows:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;
- Go to ‘Settings’;
- Open ‘privacy’;
- Tap ‘Last seen and online’;
- Choose ‘nobody’ under ‘who can see my reports last seen’;
- Finally, select ‘Same as the last seen’ under ‘who can see that I am online’.
Have you switched off the functions? Then WhatsApp does not show anyone that you are online, not even in group discussions. The disadvantage is that this information is also no longer visible with other contacts. So you can’t see when someone is online or when someone opened WhatsApp for the last time. Do you want to see this? In that case, select all contacts for which you want to hide your ‘last seen’ and ‘online’, from the remainder you will see this information.

WhatsApp has now released the new function for all users worldwide. It can take a while before you see the new feature in the application. Usually rolling out a new part in the app takes a few days to weeks. It is therefore possible that you do not yet see the new subtitle in group discussions, but that the position will be published soon.
You don’t have to update WhatsApp, because there is no update available. Instead, WhatsApp rolls out the new function in the current version of the application. Soon you will see how many contacts are online in a group on WhatsApp. You do not see (for the time being) exactly which people are.
