It is now possible to set WhatsApp as the standard app you use for calling. We show how you do that!
WhatsApp can now be set as a standard app for calling
WhatsApp is very popular in the Netherlands. With the app you can not only send messages and photos, but you can of course also call it. Your iPhone uses the ‘telephone’ app as standard, but you can replace it since iOS 18.2 with WhatsApp. You set this in the following way:
- Open the ‘Settings’ app on your iPhone;
- Scroll all the way down and choose ‘Apps’;
- Then tap ‘Standard apps’;
- Scroll down and choose ‘Calling’;
- Then choose ‘WhatsApp’ in the list.
You can of course also tap the WhatsApp app to call, but setting the app as a standard app has some advantages. For example, if you tap the ‘Call’ button in the contacts app, your iPhone will now immediately use WhatsApp to call and no longer the app telephone.
Apple has introduced the function to change these standard apps in iOS 18.2. First it was said that they would only make the function available in the EU, but the option to adjust the Bellen app is now available worldwide.
In addition to adjusting the app to call, you can also use WhatsApp as a standard app at the same place to send messages. By default, your iPhone uses the app messages for this, but from now on you can also ignore it.
Incidentally, you can not only adjust the standard apps for calling or sending messages here. You can also change the standard browser or App Store here. Apps must have built support into the app for this. So it may be that your favorite app is not (now) in between.
Restore standard app
Have you tried it for a while and do you find it calling whatsapp but nothing? Then you can restore the standard app ‘telephone’ in the same way. To do this, follow the above steps and set the usual apps again.
