WhatsApp gives more power to group administrators, improves video player

An update to WhatsApp ensures that all group conversation managers get more functions to manage the group chat. It is also easier to watch Facebook and Instagram videos in the app.

WhatsApp group managers are given more options

WhatsApp is still the most popular and most used chat app in the Netherlands, partly due to the large amount of group conversations that are used day in and day out. WhatsApp is meeting these users today with a number of new features. The administrator, the person who originally created the group, is provided with a number of useful options.

For example, he or she can now set who has the right to change the name of the group, the group image and the group description. Until now, everyone could change these settings by default, but administrators from version 2.18.51 put a stop to this.

In addition, administrators can revoke administrator rights from group members. Have you also named another person administrator in the past? Then you can now undo this decision by following the steps below.

This is how you change the WhatsApp administrator settings

  1. Open WhatsApp and the group you want to edit;
  2. Tap the name of the group;
  3. Select ‘Group Settings’;
  4. Select ‘Change group admins’;
  5. Select the person whose rights you want to revoke here.

Although these functions will be used less often in small groups with acquaintances, they are a welcome addition to WhatsApp. Increasingly, large groups are being created to which unknown people are continuously added. An administrator now has more options to manage these large groups.

New video player for Instagram and Facebook

The WhatsApp update also introduces a handy new function for forwarding Facebook and Instagram videos. If you send a video from one of these social networks from now on, you can now open the link directly in WhatsApp. This means you do not switch apps and you can just watch the video in the chat window with a picture-in-picture window.

Very handy, because you can watch a video while you can watch another conversation in the meantime. It is no coincidence that WhatsApp improves the cooperation with Facebook and Instagram: Facebook is the owner of both Instagram and WhatsApp. The update that adds these three improvements is now available to everyone through the App Store.
