The feature was tested in WhatsApp for Android, but now it seems to be coming to the iPhone as well. It allows you to share files via WhatsApp, without an internet connection. You do have to be near each other to forward the files.

However, due to limitations in iOS, the feature will work a little differently on iPhone than it does on Android.
In the Android version, the app can automatically detect other devices nearby. With the Airdrop-like version of WhatsApp for the iPhone, you first have to scan a QR code to share files. One advantage is that file sharing works between iPhone and Android users. That makes sharing files between different smartphones a lot easier.
At the moment, the feature is only available in beta. It is therefore still a question when the feature will be available to everyone.
