Developers can now get their hands on iOS 18, but when will the public beta hit your iPhone? Here’s when you can update.
iOS 18 has been announced
At WWDC 2024, Apple announced iOS 18. It is one of the biggest updates for the iPhone ever due to the introduction of Apple Intelligence, the company’s new technology that works with artificial intelligence. Many Apple apps are expanded with AI functions, for example Siri becomes much smarter through the use of ChatGPT and a handy writing aid is added to almost every app.

The first and second test versions of iOS 18 are now available for developers. They can get started with the new functions, to adapt applications to the new software. These betas are free to install for anyone with a special developer account at Apple, but you are not supposed to put the test version on the iPhone that you use every day. According to Apple, you have to wait for the public beta of iOS 18 for that.
iOS 18 Public Beta
The first test version of a new iOS generation often still contains software bugs. These are fixed in new test versions, only then does Apple release the public beta of iOS 18. The public test version is suitable to put on your iPhone, even if you use it every day. Often most problems are fixed in the public beta, so that the update is almost the same as the final version of iOS 18.
The public test version is usually released five weeks after the first beta. With iOS 17, the public beta was released on July 12, 2023, and with iOS 16, the release was on July 11, 2022. If we continue that line with iOS 18, we can see the update on July 8, 9 or 10 expect. That means you may be able to install the iOS 18 public beta on your iPhone tonight, to try out the latest features. iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18 are also getting new updates.
Official Release of iOS 18
Are you planning to install the public beta of iOS 18? Keep a close eye on your iPhone this week, because the update will automatically appear in the settings of the device. To do this, go to ‘Settings > General > Software Update’, where you normally find the new software versions. Be careful, because test versions of new updates can still contain annoying bugs.

Do you want to prevent that? Then you better wait until September, because that’s when Apple releases the official version of iOS 18. In the final release, Apple has fixed the software bugs and the new features work properly. For Apple Intelligence, we have to wait a bit longer, because that technology will not be available in Europe until 2025.
