Why we don’t expect a Pixel 7 in the Netherlands this year either

Google has seen its Pixel sales rise sharply in recent months compared to a year earlier. Even so, Google remains a very small player in its home market. What does this mean for the Pixel 7? Can we expect it in more markets soon?

Google sells more phones

Google has found a small gap in the smartphone market, as the company has quadrupled its sales of Pixel phones in its home country of North America. It sold about 800,000 Pixels in the second quarter of 2022, compared to 200,000 units sold a year earlier. This is evident from figures from market researcher canalys.

North America is the main market to measure the success of Google phones, as Pixels are only available in a limited number of European countries. Google achieved success with the Pixel 6 and the Pixel 6 Pro in the fall of 2022 and the affordable Pixel 6a is also increasing sales. The company itself was already enthusiastic about the sale of its latest devices.

Small market share

If we ignore the sales numbers and only look at the market share, we find that Google has a market share of 2 percent in North America, compared to 1 percent a year earlier. And despite that growth, that share is still relatively low.

Especially if you know that LG was still good for a market share of 10 percent in the second quarter in 2021. We see that in figures from Counterpoint Research. The same brand threw in the towel in 2021. LG was active almost worldwide and it did not succeed everywhere to hijack 10 percent of the market share.

What does it mean for the Pixel 7?

It may explain why Google remains cautious about offering its Pixel devices in more markets. It would therefore certainly not be surprising if the Pixel 7 series will also be available for sale in a small number of countries, despite the growth that Google has achieved this year.

Google showcased the Pixel 7 series at its Google I/O 2022 event. A lot has already been leaked about the camera and it was also shown in a hands-on. We expect Google to introduce the phone in October.
