Checking which Wi-Fi network you are connected to and what your password is is quite a chore with iOS. New app Wi-Fi Widget wants to make this a lot easier, and puts these options in a handy widget.
Check your internet speed with Wi-Fi Widget
Wi-Fi Widget is a new app that takes full advantage of the updated iOS 10 widget screen. By placing the app in this screen, or by pressing the app icon with 3D Touch, a screen appears. On this you can read the name and the current speed of the WiFi network.
This is useful, for example, if your iPhone automatically connects to Wi-Fi hotspots and you are therefore sometimes accidentally connected not to your own home network, but to someone nearby. Instead of digging into the settings of iOS, you can check this a lot faster with Wi-Fi Widget.
In addition to checking your interconnection, the app is also a handy way to quickly share your WiFi router password with others. At the bottom of the widget, the password is written out with a copy button below.
To keep this data safe, the passwords are synced through Apple’s iCloud Keychain. The only problem is (still) that this WiFi password also appears in the widget if your iPhone is still locked. This, in theory, makes it possible for someone to grab your locked iPhone and read your router’s password.
First update already underway
Fortunately, the maker of Wi-Fi Widget has already committed to fixing this security flaw in version 1.02 of the app. It has already been submitted and should appear as an update soon. This update gives you the option to protect your password when your iPhone is locked. Something we can recommend to everyone.
Wi-Fi Widget is temporarily available with a 60 percent discount in the App Store for 0.99 euros. Highly recommended for avid users of the iOS widget screen or for those who always have to search for the WiFi password when new people come over.
