Windows Live Mail: Install and Send Email

Windows Live Mail: Install and Send EmailWindows Live Mail is a free email program from Microsoft. It is the successor to the programs Outlook Express and Windows Mail. The program can be used on devices with Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, among others.

Windows Live Mail is especially interesting for people with Windows 7. That operating system does not have its own mail program. You can use Windows Live Mail with a provider address or, for example, your Gmail address. We no longer recommend the program for use with a Microsoft e-mail address. Such an email address ends with @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @hotmail.nl, @live.com, @live.nl, @msn.com or @msn.nl.

You can download Windows Live Mail from the “Windows Live Mail” article. There you will find all the instructions for downloading Windows Live Mail.

The Live Mail program is located in Windows 7 under Start > All Programs > Windows Live Mail. If you use Windows 8.1, you can find the program as a tile on the Start screen or via the shortcut on the Desktop. In Windows 10, click Start > All apps > Windows Live Mail.

When you open the program for the first time, you will see a screen where you can add e-mail accounts.

If you don’t see this screen, click on the tab Accounts and then the button E-mail. This button has an at sign with a green plus sign 071215_Email.

After adding one email account, you can choose whether to complete this action or add another email account. You can then work with multiple e-mail addresses within the e-mail program. Want to add another email account? Then click on Add another email account.

The program opens the mail folders on the left and the contents of the folders or messages on the right.

At the very top, you’ll see “Quick Look.” Below you can see at a glance all unread e-mails from all added e-mail addresses. This can be useful if you use multiple addresses.

In Windows Live Mail, you have a separate Inbox for each address added. This way you keep the emails from multiple addresses separate. If you don’t see the quick view, click the tab Image and click on ‘Layout’ Quick view.

To send an email, click on the button in the ‘Home’ tab Email message . An empty message appears. In it you can type the address of the recipient, add a subject and compose the rest of the email. Then click Send to send the email.
