Withings Body Comp: Smart scale with advanced body measurements

Measure BMI, fat percentage, heart rate, nerve health and cardiovascular, among other things

Everyone knows that a healthy weight is necessary for good health. A smart scale can help you with this, a good example of this is the Withings Body Comp scale.

This smart scale from Withings not only measures your weight, but also other aspects of your body composition, including your BMI, fat percentage, muscle mass, bone mass and water percentage. In addition, the scale can also calculate your cardiovascular age and also monitor your nerve health, pulse wave speed and heart rate.

Withings Body Comp in short

The Withings Body Composition scale is a smart scale that not only measures your weight, but also other aspects of your body composition. The scale uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure body composition, including your body weight, fat percentage, muscle mass, bone mass and water percentage. That’s just the beginning, the scale can do much more.

The Body Comp can also monitor your heart and nerve health. For example, it can provide an indication of your cardiovascular health from your pulse wave velocity, vascular age and standing heart rate. In addition, they can also assess the health of nerves in your feet for signs of peripheral neuropathy to detect.

Sleek design

Like all Withings products, the design of the Body Comp scale is sleek. Thanks to its modern design, it fits seamlessly into any interior. The scale is available in black and white.

The scale is finished with a glass plate with rounded corners, the base is made of metal and aluminum.

Setting Withings Body Composition

Like all Withings products, setting up and using is very easy. You can register the scale and connect it to your WiFi network via the Withings Health Mate app. During the registration process, the various aspects of the scale are explained and you can then take your first measurement.

Setting Withings Body Composition

The scale is then synchronized with the Withings App which is available for both iOS and Android, allowing you to track your data and see your progress. The app also offers useful features such as graphs and trends, weight loss recommendations, and access to other health and fitness apps.

Another feature of the Withings Body Composition scale is that it can support multiple user profiles. This means that multiple people can use the scale and track and manage their data separately.

Weight and body statistics

You primarily use a scale to measure and, above all, monitor your weight. The scale uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to measure your body composition. This is not only used for your body weight, but also for measuring BMI, fat percentage, belly fat, muscle mass, bone mass and water percentage.

BIA is a method of measuring the composition of the body by passing a weak electrical current through the body and measuring the resistance to this current. This measurement is based on the fact that different tissues in the body have different electrical conductivities. The scale can recognize this and convert it into data.

However, the accuracy of BIA depends on several factors, including the type of device, the quality of the electrodes, the hydration of the body, and the presence of electrically conductive materials in the body, such as metal implants or clothing.

While BIA is not always the most accurate method of measuring body composition, it can still be a useful and relatively simple way to understand body composition and track changes over time.

Heart health

The Withings Body Composition scale contains sensors that can monitor the health of your heart. Not only is your standing heart rate measured via your feet, your vascular age and pulse wave speed are also monitored.

Pulse Wave Velocity

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a measure of the stiffness and elasticity of the arteries in the body. It is the speed at which the pressure wave travels through the arteries when the heart contracts and pumps blood through the body. The Withings scale can detect pulsations in the blood stream and give you advice about this.

Because PWV measures the speed at which the pressure wave travels through the arteries, it can be used as a measure of the degree of stiffness and elasticity of the arteries. When the arteries become stiffer, the PWV will be higher because the pressure wave moves faster through the stiffer tissue. Conversely, the PWV will be lower in more elastic and healthy arteries.

PWV measurements are often used to assess the health of the cardiovascular system and can help predict the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. A higher PWV is associated with a higher risk of these diseases and may indicate the need for further testing and treatment.

In the Health Mate app you can view the results and indicate whether the pulse wave speed is optimal, normal or suboptimal. Based on this, you can possibly make an appointment with your doctor to discuss the results.

Vascular age

Based on all the collected data, the Body Comp can also provide an indication of your Vascular age. This involves looking at your heart rate and pulse wave speed, as well as weight and other body measurements. This allows the scale to assess how old or young your blood vessels are, regardless of the person’s actual age.

Vascular age is calculated by comparing the results of the measurements with the expected results for people of the same age and sex without risk factors for cardiovascular disease. If the test results are more favorable than the expected results, the vascular age may be lower than the person’s actual age, indicating that the blood vessels are relatively healthy. If the test results are less favorable than the expected results, the vascular age may be higher than the person’s actual age, indicating that the blood vessels are relatively less healthy.

Nerve health

New for the Withings scales is determining nerve health. The Body Comp gives you a Nerve Health Score (NHS), which measures and assesses the activity of the sweat glands in the soles of the feet and helps to detect and monitor peripheral autonomic neuropathies.

Nerve health withings app

Sweat gland activity is measured by stimulating the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands in your feet with a weak electrical current and then watching how they respond.

The Nerve Health Score gives a result between 0 and 100, with results below 50 being considered low and above as normal. Thanks to this technology, the Body Comp can draw signs of peripheral neuropathy detect.

View results in the Withings app

When you use the scale, you can read the results on the screen of the device itself during measurements. If you want more details, you can consult the Health Mate Withings app. All measurements are stored in the app so that you can consult everything afterwards or share it with your doctor.

Not only can you view the results in detail, you will also find additional information and explanations about the different values. This gives you a good picture of your health and this is also closely monitored.

Body Comp in practice

Over the past few weeks I have used the Withings Body Comp scale almost daily. Before this I had the Body Cardio scale from Withings and I notice that the new Body Comp is much faster than the previous generations. It also now indicates the weight with two digits after the decimal point.

The scale is available in two colors: black and white. I now have the black version, but dust, grease and water stains are very visible on it. You clean yourself accidentally, I had the white scale for this and it is slightly more maintenance friendly.

The Body Comp provides a lot of information about your health. The ability to measure pulse wave speed and nerve health is a plus and provides a good indication of cardiovascular health, among other things.

The extensive information and statistics in the Withings app are synchronized well and quickly. If desired, you can also export them to Apple’s Health app. In the application you will find trends and explanations about the measurements so that you know what the data all mean.
