X is heading for a European ban due to sexual AI images of Grok

AI chatbot Grok unlawfully generates and distributes sexual images on platform X, which may lead to a European ban.

Research into AI images of Grok

AI chatbot Grok is currently under scrutiny worldwide because it is on the social media platform X generates and distributes unlawful sexual images. Measures have already been taken in Indonesia and Malaysia and this could certainly also happen in Europe.

According to the British regulator Ofcom, there may be pornography and images of child abuse. Ofcom is now one research to Grok after the disturbing reports. The research should make it clear how much risk people run of seeing illegal content on the platform. In addition, the risks to children are examined and whether further measures are necessary.

Worldwide commotion

The issue is global. There has been a lot of fuss about AI-generated images that can be created without the consent of the people depicted. This does not only concern adults. Generating images of children also turned out to be possible.

Several countries have now intervened. Malaysia has restricted access to Grok for the time being. The Malaysian internet regulator confirmed this last Sunday. Indonesia took similar measures a day earlier and there is a good chance that more countries will follow.

X and Grok have announced that the offensive images have now been removed. In addition, xAI announced that only paying users can still generate images.

Punishable

Making unsolicited sexually explicit images is a criminal offense in the Netherlands. This also applies if this is done with the help of generative AI, such as with Grok on X. Whether such images are accidentally generated or not makes no difference. Moreover, it is difficult to defend that someone unintentionally ends up with sexually explicit images when using generative AI. A European ban for Grok and/or X is therefore certainly not inconceivable.
