You can buy these premium mid-size SUVs for €20,000

The most searched for used cars on the well-known used car websites in 2023 were the BMW 3-series, Volkswagen Golf, Toyota Yaris, Volvo XC60 and the Toyota RAV4. Because we have already discussed the 3 Series, Golf and Yaris in these columns, this time we focus on number four on the list: the Volvo XC60. Toyota’s RAV4 will be featured next time. We opt for the premium mid-sized SUV as the starting point for the search.

From the same message: the average search price from website visitors was €19,258. We round this up and, with 20 grand in our pockets, we look for such a tough Swede. We also portray two premium competitors; the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and the Audi Q5.

Volvo XC60 T5 Summum – 2012 – 178,300 kilometers – €19,990

Quite remarkable, that fourth place. That does not mean that all interested parties will actually purchase a used XC60, but this small and cheap guy certainly has nothing to complain about. In some ways it is understandable: the XC60 is a non-aggressive looking high seater and various buying guides show that it is a reliable companion. But hey, you have to be able to afford it and that’s why we’re on the safe side. At a Volvo dealer we find this Volvo XC60: built in 2012, less than 180,000 kilometers of experience, driven by three owners.

Despite the luxurious Summum version, the first buyer has gone a long way with the options list: from a rear entertainment system via a package of safety aids to a tow bar and from an electrically operated panoramic roof via an electric tailgate to a navigation system. This creates the image of an active, wealthy family as the first owner. A family that didn’t really leave the beaten track, because the 29-ZHD-7 is simply a front-wheel drive car. And a quiet one at that. This does not so much concern the blown 2.0 four-cylinder engine of 241 hp, but more the somewhat distant character of this used car. Although it steers quite directly, you get little feedback from the chassis. It also wants to lean slightly in fast corners, with the leather-covered seats providing little lateral support. We do see a tasteful combination: gray-blue paint and a light beige interior.

No, the This way you arrive at your destination relaxed and pampered. Note: for an extensive delivery package including a 12-month Bovag warranty, an additional charge of €895 applies. Plaster on the wound: this XC60 is narrowly the most economical and lightest of the trio.

Range Rover Evoque 2.0Si 4WD Sicilian Yellow – 2013 – 193,345 kilometers – €19,950

Anyone who regularly leaves the beaten track and still wants a ‘lifestyle’ will soon end up with the Range Rover Evoque. The TS-211-H (February 2013, in our country since October 2018 and worn by two owners since then) also has the addition ‘Sicilian Yellow’. It stands for the fully loaded top version, which is the only petrol Evoque in our database.

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque used

This Range Rover Evoque is still equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission, the nine-speed variant came in 2014 and is even more capable off-road. Anyway, that automatic transmission is linked to a blown two-liter that we know from the aforementioned Volvo XC60, and also the Ford S-Max, for example. In the Evoque it has slightly more torque at a slightly lower speed. Good for (pulling) work on unpaved surfaces – also consider available features such as hill assist, a limited slip differential and the so-called TerrainResponse system in which the control of the four-wheel drive is tailored to the surface – but the Brit also feels at home on paved surfaces such as chic shopping streets. . The interior is a tasteful whole, made of beautiful materials. Surprisingly, the smallest of this trio offers the most space in the front. This is at the expense of the rear passengers. Also special: for a car with 4×4 genes, it is quite dynamic on pavement, while not losing sight of comfort, despite the large 20-inch wheels.

We already mentioned it: this white Sicilian Yellow leaves little to be desired in terms of equipment and is largely comparable to that of the Volvo. You have to pay for all this: the Evoque requires a – knowing the brand: expensive – maintenance every 16,000 kilometers (Audi and Volvo: 30,000 kilometers), while the Swede still enjoys a bodywork warranty (twelve years), the Brit’s has six years. years have long since expired and we are talking about warranty; Unfortunately the advertisement does not mention this.

Audi Q5 used car

Audi Q5 3.2 FSI quattro Pro Line – 2011 – 188,748 kilometers – €19,950

Integral drive, but doesn’t it have to be as bling-bling as the Evoque? Then the Audi Q5 quattro soon comes to the surface. In contrast to exactly one petrol-fired Evoque, we find several Q5s in our database. Unfortunately, all are equipped with the sensitive 2.0 TFSI – except one: this Audi Q5. No blown four-cylinder engine on board, but the naturally aspirated 3.2 V6. It is the most powerful engine of the trio, but maximum torque is only released much later – inherent to a naturally aspirated power source. The Q5 3.2 is the fastest of our featured trio and can also handle two tons under braking (XC60 and Evoque: 1,800 kilos), but the consumption is higher.

Audi Q5 used car

The 69-PTF-8 is the oldest, four Dutch owners have driven it almost 190,000 kilometers. According to the advertisement, the timing chain has recently been replaced and the used car comes with a Bovag warranty. On the outside it is a real Audi: a bit of a blown-up A3 Sportback. On the inside, it is also a true representative from Ingolstadt: the interior and dashboard are not surprising, but convince with beautiful materials, solid workmanship and good ergonomics, partly thanks to the MMI system. Here too, the first owner took a selection from the options list, but all in all, this occasion is the least luxurious. With its interior space, it falls somewhat between the other two: a bit more spacious here, a bit tighter there, but nowhere noticeable. The driving is the same: not as dynamic as the Evoque, but not as calmly as the XC60. The Q5 doesn’t struggle when taking a fast bend, it is foreign to leaning. The steering behavior is communicative with a touch of sportiness. Do you want to go into the terrain? Even then you will find the middle ground in this four-wheeler: you get further than the front-wheel drive Volvo, but the Range Rover is of course king Rough of this trio – if necessary.

Which premium SUV appeals to you most?

In summary: if the XC60 is a family friend Labrador, then the Evoque is a British terrier. It bites into any surface. The Evoque is a hip and dynamic, but also expensive toy. The Volvo seems to take the least out of the household budget. The Audi Q5 3.2 is in between the other two on many fronts, is equipped with a six-cylinder, but is the least well equipped. What would be your choice between these three? Or would you rather have a BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLK or another premium crossover? We would like to hear it!
