Your iPhone’s camera has received a ton of upgrades over the years, but did you know there’s a handy feature you should always have on? This is the Wind Noise Reduction feature. This function of the camera on your iPhone significantly reduces the wind noise in your recordings.

Enable wind noise reduction on your iPhone

  1. Open your iPhone’s ‘Settings’;

  2. Scroll down and tap ‘Camera’;

  3. Then choose the option ‘Record sound’;

  4. Set the slider for ‘Reduce wind noise’ to on.

Less wind noise for videos

As the name suggests, the feature is designed to reduce wind noise often heard when filming outdoors. When you’re recording a video outdoors, your iPhone’s microphones can quickly pick up this unwanted noise. This can disrupt the sound of your recording, making it not very pleasant to listen to the video. In addition, it may happen that you can hardly hear voices in the video anymore.

The feature uses the iPhone’s advanced microphones to automatically filter out wind noise. After an analysis, the amount of noise is reduced, so that you only hear the important sound. This is especially useful when you are filming outside during activities such as cycling or walking.

The function almost always works well, but it is good to know that the reduction of wind noise does not always work completely well. In extremely heavy winds, the noise can sometimes be difficult to eliminate. In addition, in rare cases the feature may affect the sound quality of other ambient sounds, such as conversations or music. Then it is sometimes wise to temporarily disable the function.
