Samsung will this year, according to rumors from the rumor propagator Ice Universe, all Galaxy S22 models feature a glass back. With this, the South Korean manufacturer would say goodbye to plastic with the cheapest model. Is this news Glasstic fantastic?
Glasstic feels like glass, but isn’t it
From the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung invariably gives the flagships a glass back. It was Samsung’s first flagship with a glass housing and it gave the Galaxy S6 a luxurious look. This is completely in comparison with the previous Galaxy S devices, the Galaxy S up to and including the Galaxy S5. These all used thin and cheap-feeling plastic on the back.
In 2021, however, Samsung partially switched to plastic, or ‘Glasstic’ as the company calls it. This ‘Glasstic’ is plastic that should feel like glass. The cheapest S21 model, the Galaxy S21, got such a Glasstic back. The main reason for this was cost savings. And we were quite satisfied with the finish of the Samsung Galaxy S21. Our editor Sebastien said the following in his review at the time: ”The back of the device also has a handsome, matte appearance. I am also convinced of Samsung’s choice for Frosted Plastic over glass. Plastic on the back is certainly not a bad alternative to glass. It is stronger, lighter and, provided the right finish, it certainly doesn’t have to feel cheap.”
Back to glass
According to Ice Universe, however, Samsung would now choose to provide all models of their S-line with real glass. The advantage of this should be that the phone should feel more luxurious than the ‘regular’ S21 and that it should be more resistant to scratches. However, one drawback that sticks to glass is that it can break into hundreds of pieces if you drop it. As a result, you actually have to put a cover on the device again, so that the ‘luxury touch’ is immediately lost. However?
