BMW is going to prepare several factories in Germany and abroad for the production of more fully electric cars. The biggest change is taking place in its oldest factory in hometown Munich.
In the coming years, various BMW factories will focus more on the production of electric cars. A lot is changing in Munich. The majority of combustion engines are currently being built there in addition to cars, but that will change in the coming years. BMW is investing € 400 million in the factory to prepare it for the construction of electric cars. Space must first be made for this. The production of the four- and six-cylinder combustion engines is therefore moving from Munich to Steyr in Austria. The eight and twelve cylinders will be built in the British Hams Hall in the future. The latter seems a handy choice, especially because of its subsidiary brand Rolls-Royce. Engine production must be out of Munich by 2024.

Not only Munich is being prepared for a more electric future. According to BMW, every German factory will eventually make electric cars. At least one model per factory. The BMW i4 will roll off the production line in Munich next year. Dingolfing will build the iX as well as electric versions of the future 5-series and 7-series (i5, i7). Then there are two other models that were undoubtedly hoped for in Born at VDL Nedcar: the electric X1 (iX1) role will soon be removed from the production line in Regensburg, the next Mini Countryman (both electric and with combustion engine) will come from Leipzig. Then of course we still miss the iX3, but it is currently being built in Dadong, China, and it will remain so.
