Crash detection problems: leave your iPhone 14 at home during winter sports

iPhone 14 Crash Detection Issues! When skiing, your phone now incorrectly gives an emergency message. Do you have to turn off the new feature?

Crash Detection: new feature from Apple

Apple’s crash detection is a brand new feature for the iPhone 14 (Plus), iPhone 14 Pro (Max), Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2022 and Apple Watch Ultra. With this, your Apple device automatically calls the local emergency number after a car accident and the smartphone or smartwatch also immediately provides your location.

Your SOS contact person will also be notified. Very handy, because after an accident you want the emergency troops to arrive as quickly as possible!

Crash detection sometimes goes off accidentally

It seemed quite difficult to just activate the new function on the iPhone 14. The iPhone 14 (Pro) uses the data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, microphone and GPS to find out whether you have indeed crashed into something. Nevertheless, there have already been several reports of crash detection going off incorrectly.

The first crash detection issues on the iPhone 14 were reported by US theme park visitors. During rides of various roller coasters, crash detection was activated, including calling local emergency services. The same problem now occurs with skiing and snowboarding: here too, crash detection goes off incorrectly.

So it turns out that making violent and sudden movements by your Apple device is registered as a violent accident. And that while Apple has tested the crash detection on four types of serious car accidents. These are a frontal collision, side impact, rear-end collision and a (impressive) car rollover.

The crash detection is therefore not yet as accurate as previously thought and hoped. Good news: in the new iOS 16.1.2 update for the iPhone 14 models, crash detection has already been improved. Do you want to make sure that you don’t accidentally call the emergency services during a ski trip or roller coaster ride? Then it is wise to turn on airplane mode.

To turn on airplane mode on your iPhone 14, swipe down at the top right to open Control Center. Then tap the airplane icon to turn on airplane mode. Swipe from bottom to top on your Apple Watch, an airplane icon will also appear. This way you are sure to fix the crash detection problem on your iPhone and iWatch!
