Compact Alfa ideal balance between fun and economical?
In 2020, the Alfa Romeo Mito has disappeared from the market after a career of twelve years. It may be subjective, but if it’s up to us, the model still looks pretty current. Is a used Mito such a ‘Geheimtipp’ that can also be economical in addition to fun? We find out with the help of the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor.
In the Consumption Monitor we find no less than 41 Alfa Mitos, 29 of which are equipped with the 1.3 JTDm diesel engine. Not surprising, because in the first years you could drive these cars free of road tax or with a low addition. How different is the picture now. Of the 57 used Mito’s on AutoWeek.nl, only eight still have a diesel engine under the hood.
Consumption Mito 1.3 JTDm
It does not mean that almost all diesel MiTos have disappeared or are for sale. The most economical driving JTDm is still driving around. His loyal owner has been tracking consumption for more than six years and almost 140,000 kilometers. And with exactly 1 in 23 (4.3 l/100 km), that consumption is particularly favorable.
The least economical diesel Mito with which a representative distance was driven consumed an average of 1 in 17.5 (5.7 l/100 km). The average consumption of all 29 Mito 1.3 JTDm’s is 1 in 19.8 (5.1 l/100 km). That sounds neat, but the factory was very optimistic with its 1 in 28.6 (3.5 l / 100 km).
Consumption Mito 1.4 Turbo
The Alfa Mito with 1.4-liter turbo engine is considerably less common in the Consumption Monitor with nine copies. Nevertheless, we are curious about the consumption of this engine, which is now more interesting than the diesel due to the current tax rates and fuel prices. The average consumption? 1 in 13.1 (7.7 l/100 km). Although this engine with its 120 or 155 hp fits the Alfa character better than the somewhat tame diesel with 85 hp, you cannot blame the consumer of the time for opting for the diesel.
For a Mito-sized car, a fuel consumption of 1 to 13.1 is of course on the high side. It is therefore hardly more economical than the larger Giulietta with 1.4-liter MultiAir engine. The – well, somewhat more modern – Mini Cooper is not particularly economical at 1 to 15.4. It does show that profit has been made in this segment.
