Waiting for iPhone 15: this is why you better skip the iPhone 14

The iPhone 15 will not be released until September, so you have to wait a little longer. But here we explain why the iPhone 15 is worth the wait.

iPhone 15 will be released in September

Apple presents the new series of iPhones in September every year, and this year will probably be no different. In fact, if we have to believe the rumors, the exact dates are already known. Apple reportedly presents the new series of iPhones on September 12, 2023, the iPhone 15 will then be in stores from September 22, 2023.

The new line of iPhones is likely to consist of four versions – just like the iPhone 14 – the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 (Pro) and the 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max. If you’re still looking for a new iPhone, it’s better to wait for the iPhone 15 and skip the iPhone 14. We explain why.

Always on screen coming to all iPhone 15 models

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are Apple’s first phones with an always-on screen. With the new feature you always see the time, notifications and lock screen widgets of iOS 16 on screen – even when your phone is in sleep mode.

iPhone 14 Pro Max always on

Apple has often extended functions from the Pro models to the regular iPhones, so it is expected that the always-on screen will come to the entire iPhone 15 series. The regular iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also get the cool new feature, which allows you to always see the time and notifications at a glance.

New iPhone has (much) thinner bezels

Another reason to wait for the iPhone 15 is because of the new design of the iPhone 15 Pro. The phone will probably get a titanium housing, which will give your iPhone great protection against scratches and damage. The edges of the phone will also look slightly different: they are now rounded and no longer angular as with the iPhone 14 Pro.

This new design means that the iPhone 15 Pro has a slightly smaller housing than the iPhone 14 Pro. The screen edges are becoming considerably thinner, so that the housing is less large. It looks a lot better and the iPhone 15 Pro probably feels even better in the hand due to the more compact size.

Dynamic Island is coming to entire iPhone 15 series

Not only the always on screen comes to all iPhone 15 models, the Dynamic Island is also added to the phones. Now only the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max have the Dynamic Island, but with the iPhone 15 series, the ‘normal’ iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus also have the dynamic island.

The notch (black notch) therefore disappears permanently and makes way for the bar that can change shape. The expectation is that the Dynamic Island itself will not change, it will remain the same as we now know from the iPhone 14 Pro (Max).

All iPhone 15 models will get a 120 Hertz screen

The iPhone 15 series will once again have a better screen. The iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 14 Pro Max already have a 120 Hertz screen and it is expected that all iPhone 15 models will get such a screen. The amount of Hertz (abbreviated Hz) represents the number of times a screen refreshes the image per second.

The 60 Hz screen of the iPhone 14 (Plus) refreshes its pixels every second, so sixty times. The iPhone 15 (Plus) will have a screen that refreshes its pixels twice as much per second. So waiting for the iPhone 15 pays off, because your iPhone feels much faster and animations on the screen are much smoother with such a screen. Apple also calls this technique the ProMotion technique.

iPhone 15 Pro will (hopefully) get a periscope camera

Apple improves the camera of the iPhone every year and we expect the same with the iPhone 15. The iPhone 15 Pro is reportedly getting a new periscope lens. Such a lens is mainly intended to zoom in much further than is currently possible with the iPhone 14 Pro, for example.

With the periscope lens in your iPhone, you are expected to be able to zoom in 10x. For comparison: with the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) you can zoom in 3x. It also ensures that this latest iPhone can capture a (more) natural depth of field. A periscope lens therefore represents a significant improvement.

Apple switches to USB-C with the new iPhones

The new iPhone 15 models that will be released this year will all be equipped with a USB-C port. This is the result of new European legislation, which states that all new electronic devices must have a USB-C connection from November 2024. This should reduce electronic waste in the future.

This new law forces Apple to provide the iPhone 15 models with a USB-C port. Apple’s Lightning era is coming to an end, so it is wise to wait a little longer for the iPhone 15. With a USB-C port you can go ahead for years to come, while Apple will probably eventually stop selling of the Lightning cable.

The new series of iPhones will get the even faster A17 chip

And last but not least: the new series of iPhones will probably get the new A17 chip. This applies at least to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the regular iPhones are upgraded to the A16 Bionic chip. Not much is known about the A17 Bionic chip, but the chip is undoubtedly much faster than its predecessor.
