Working with Google Drive over the web

Working with Google Drive over the webGoogle Drive is useful for storing files. Via the Google Drive website, the user can use the cloud service on all devices with an internet connection.

Google Drive users need an internet connection and a free Google account. How to create an account can be found in the article ‘Create a Google account’. The Google Drive website is accessible through the internet program.

Whatever device the user has, he can always access his Google Drive account via the website Google.com/drive.

  • Go to www.google.com/drive
  • click on To Drive.
  • Log in with your Google account if necessary.
    • Enter your username (the email address associated with the Google account).
    • click on Next one.
    • Enter the corresponding password.
    • click on Next one.

The first time you visit the website, you can take a tour to familiarize yourself with the site. Click on the blue circle to navigate through the tour and finally click on Go to Drive.

The Google Drive cloud service allows the user to store and view all kinds of files. When you are logged in, an overview opens with all files. At the top are frequently used files and below all folders and files.

  • If necessary, double-click a folder first.
  • Double click on the desired file.

The file opens in a new tab.

Upload a file or folder as follows:

  • Press the button New.
    New item at Google Drive
  • click on Upload files or Upload folder.
  • Browse to the file or folder you want to put in Google Drive.
  • Click on the file or folder.
  • click on To open.

At the bottom right you can see the upload progress.

Folders are useful for organizing files. Create a new folder like this:

  • Press the button New.
  • click on folder.
  • Type the name of the folder.
  • click on To make.

The folder has been created and is on the Google Drive home page.

Move files to a (different) folder in Google Drive like this:

  • Click in the left menu My Drive.
  • If necessary, double-click the folder first if it contains the file you want to move.
  • Click on the file you want to move.
  • Click the ‘More actions’ icon at the top right. That’s the three dots icon.

  • click on Move to.
  • A menu appears. Click here on the desired folder.
  • click on Move.

The file is in the chosen location.

Delete files that do not need to be kept. This frees up space for other files.

  • Click in the left menu My Drive.
  • Click on the file.
  • Click the ‘Delete’ icon at the top right Google Drive trash can icon.

The file is in the Recycle Bin. The file will remain in this for 30 days, after which Google will delete it permanently.

Accidentally deleted a file? No problem. Then restore the file within 30 days.

  • Click in the left menu Garbage can.
  • Click on the file.
  • Click the ‘Recover from Trash’ icon at the top right Recover from Recycle Bin.

The file is back in its old location.

Share a file from Google Drive with someone else.

  • Click on the file you want to share.
  • Click the ‘Share’ icon Share to Google Drive.
  • In the ‘Add people and groups’ field, type the email address of the person you want to share the file with.
  • In the ‘Message’ field, type an accompanying text.
  • Click on a gear icon.
  • Indicate what the recipient is allowed to do with the file. Optionally, uncheck the following options:
    • Editors can change permissions and share items.
    • Viewers and commenters will see the option to download, print, and copy.
  • Click on the arrow to the left.
  • click on Send.

The recipient will receive an email informing them that you are sharing a file with them.

Done with Google Drive? Log out if you share the computer with someone.

  • Click on your profile picture at the top right (if you don’t have a profile picture, this is a circle with initials).
  • click on Log out.
